Understanding
Havan is a Vedic ceremony in which sacred mantras are recited and symbolic offerings are placed into a sacred fire. The fire represents light, purity, and transformation. The offerings express gratitude and remind us to let go of fear, anger, pride, and harmful thoughts.
For individuals, Havan offers time for prayer, reflection, and inner calm. For families, it creates a shared spiritual experience and helps pass important values to children. For the community, it builds friendship, belonging, and a commitment to the well-being of all.
You do not need previous knowledge or experience to attend. Members of the community will guide you through the ceremony.
Let us pray together and symbolically offer our fears, anger, pride, and negativity into the sacred fire.

About Arya Samaj
Arya Samaj is a worldwide Vedic movement founded by Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati in 1875. “Arya Samaj” means a society of people who strive to be noble in their thoughts, words, and actions.
Arya Samaj believes in one formless God. It encourages people to seek truth, reject falsehood, increase knowledge, act fairly, and work for the good of all. Its teachings support equal dignity, education, personal responsibility, strong families, and service to humanity.
These values remain meaningful in Canadian society. They help us respect different backgrounds, preserve our heritage, strengthen families, and contribute as responsible neighbours and citizens.
Seek truth. Grow in knowledge. Treat everyone fairly. Work for the good of all.

Our Ottawa Story
Arya Samaj became an organized community in Ottawa around 1970. Its early members gathered to practise Havan Sandhya and follow the Vedic way of life. Over the years, families continued the monthly Havan tradition and supported Vedic ceremonies, prayer, learning, and community fellowship.
Today, Arya Samaj of Ottawa continues this tradition by welcoming established members, new families, younger generations, and anyone interested in learning about Vedic values.

Speak truthfully and act with integrity.
Keep learning and help others gain knowledge.
Care for others and support those in need.
Respect the dignity of women and men equally.
Make knowledge available to every person.
Judge people by their character and conduct.
See our own progress in the progress of others.
These values connect us to our heritage while encouraging meaningful contributions to Canada’s diverse society.
Guiding Principles
These principles guide spiritual growth, ethical living, and service to society.
God is the primary source of all true knowledge and of everything known by knowledge.
God is existent, intelligent, and blissful. He is formless, all-powerful, just, merciful, unborn, endless, unchangeable, beginningless, unequalled, present everywhere, eternal, holy, and the creator of all. God alone is worthy of worship.
The Vedas are the scriptures of all true knowledge. Aryas should read them, teach them, recite them, and hear them being read.
One should always be ready to accept truth and renounce untruth.
All actions should follow Dharma and be taken after careful thought about right and wrong.
The main aim of Arya Samaj is to do good to the world by promoting the physical, spiritual, and social well-being of everyone.
Our conduct toward everyone should be guided by love, righteousness, and justice.
We should remove Avidya—ignorance—and promote Vidya—knowledge.
No one should seek only their own good. We should find our own progress in the progress of all.
We should follow social rules that promote the common good. In matters of personal welfare, everyone should be free.
Words to Inspire Us
One should always be ready to accept truth and to renounce untruth.
Cultivate all the virtues that you claim for yourselves; practise them in your lives wherever you happen to be.
Key Mantras
These are the sacred mantras recited during the Havan ceremony. You do not need to know them in advance — members of the community will guide you. Learning them lets anyone perform Havan at home or at a family celebration.
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः । तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
We meditate on the divine light; may it guide our minds.
The most important mantra in the Havan. It is repeated often and is the heart of the ceremony.
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥
We honour the three-eyed one; may we be freed from harm and filled with well-being.
A prayer for healing, strength, and the well-being of all.
ॐ अग्नये स्वाहा । इदमग्नये न मम ॥
To Agni, well-offered. This belongs to Agni, not to me.
Offerings are placed into the sacred fire with the word “Swaha,” meaning “well-offered.”
ॐ सूर्याय स्वाहा । अग्नये स्वाहा । वायवे स्वाहा ॥
Honour to the sun, the fire, and the wind.
Recited at the start to prepare the mind and heart for the ceremony.
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
Om. Peace, peace, peace.
The ceremony closes with these peace mantras, praying for peace in body, mind, and spirit.
In the Arya Samaj tradition, the Gayatri Mantra is repeated most often, and each offering into the fire is made with the word “Swaha.” The ceremony is simple and focused on truth, gratitude, and the well-being of all.
Join us at the monthly Havan to learn the mantras and the process step by step. Once you know them, you can perform Havan at home with your family — on a special occasion or simply once a week.
